SPAERO Systems was founded by brothers Ian and Nikolas Harris after they won Ohio State's BOSS Space Ventures pitch competition. This launched the start of the brother's venture, developing sustainable technology for space and Earth.

SPAERO Systems' initial product is a handheld, cold-plasma-powered surface sterilizing device called SWAN (Sterilizing Wand for Advanced Neutralization). After learning of the problems with bacteria and mold growth in space stations, the brothers started developing SWAN to tackle this problem, but it does not stop there. SWAN has potential for additional markets beyond space such as the medical and home cleaning industries.
